Since 1 April 2006, all Product Sales Data (PSD) reporting firms have been required to state whether customers received advice at the point of sale, so all figures involving advised sales are from this date onwards. For more information on what constitutes an advised sale, please refer to the glossaries below.
Mortgages PSD
- PSD only captures new sales/transactions.
- In the case of mortgage transactions, the reporting requirement[1] applies to loans for house purchase, remortgages, internal product transfers (including those effected by a new mortgage contract and those effected as contract variations) and further advances. In the case of sales data, a reportable mortgage transaction applies where the mortgage transaction has completed (meaning funds have been transferred and have been applied for the purpose of the mortgage).
- Internal product transfers and further advances must be reported in product sales data (PSD001) where they are completed on or after 1 April 2021.
- For the purposes of providing results that are comparable with previous time periods, figures for internal product transfers and further advances are not included in the main analysis. Instead, separate analysis can be found in the monthly data tables sheet.
- We publish other sources of mortgage data, such as statistics from the Mortgage Lending and Administration Return (MLAR) which is not directly comparable to mortgage PSD due to differences in data coverage. For example, further mortgage advances are included in the MLAR but not in the PSD interactive dashboard. Users of the PSD are therefore advised to bear this in mind when comparing mortgage PSD to other data.
- All home finance providers are required to submit the mortgage PSD.
- During 2023, 163 firms provided mortgage PSD to us.
Pure Protection Contracts PSD
- PSD does not include all data on transactions made through fund supermarkets and nominee accounts (such as those used in platforms).
- PSD only captures new sales; transfers, top-ups, alterations, increments and renewals are generally not included.
- Sales to retail clients or consumers made by the following types of firms are required to submit pure protection contracts PSD:
- insurers[2]
- managers[3] of authorised alternative investment funds (AIF)[4] or undertakings for collective investment in transferable securities (UCITS) schemes[5]
- operator[6]s of an investment trust savings scheme[7], or a personal pension scheme[8]
- a person[9] who issues or manages the relevant assets of the issuer of a structured capital-at-risk product[10]
- During 2023, 40 firms provided pure protection contracts PSD to us.
Retail Investments PSD
- PSD does not include all data on transactions made through nominee accounts (such as those used in platforms).
- PSD only captures new sales: transfers, top-ups, alterations, increments and renewals are generally not included.
- Figures based on sector (for example, Investment Management), are based on the portfolios[11] into which we divide firms. Sector information is based on the provider firm (please see Retail Investments Product Sales Data (PSD) glossary[12] for definition of the provider).
- Retail investment PSD requires individual pension transfers and pension opt-outs to be reported as separate transactions. This may cause an element of double counting with other transactions that occur at the same time.
- Since 1 October 2007, all PSD reporting firms have been required to report SIPP transactions.
- Sales to retail clients or consumers made by the following types of firms are required to submit retail investments PSD:
- insurers[2]
- managers [3]of authorised alternative investment funds (AIF)[4] or undertakings for collective investment in transferable securities (UCITS) schemes[5]
- operator[6]s of an investment trust savings scheme[7], or a personal pension scheme[8]
- a person[9] who issues or manages the relevant assets of the issuer of a structured capital-at-risk product[10]
- During 2023, 215 firms provided retail investment PSD to us.
